test this *now with sprite animation*

Some pieces that I did for an application to a games studio:

A few months ago I was applying to a studio in Montreal for a designer position and they had me do a test... that took a week. Crazy but I did it and surprisingly it wasn't enough time to complete totally! There were three stages to complete: a GUI design, a character design, and a sprite animation.

It's been long enough I think that I could post some of the art I did for it (I didn't get the job if you are wondering). Some of you may remember the post I had for the Pirate some time ago. She was part of the test and I think the best piece I did for it. I have a bunch of sketches that I did for the character that are in the pile of things to be scanned. So they should appear here some time soon :)

I have been waiting for ages to find out the release date of this movie! I was fortunate enough to have worked on it with the fantastic guys at Lizard Brain Animation

There are a few trailers available for it now and according to imdb.com the release is this fall for Mexico in 3D! Hopefully it makes it's English release soon after, it's my first feature film and I am really excited to actually see something I worked on in the theatre.

That and I have been waiting forever to put it on my demo reel!

Sketch of the day is Rocket from Sucker Punch. I am really happy with the way it turned out though I don't think I managed to make it nearly as cute as Jena Malone is in the film.

questionable colours

While talking to my good friend Dave Truc he gave me grief for not posting anything recently. So I took this to heart and spent the last two lunch breaks coming up with some colours for the Questionable Content fan art I sketched a while back.

There are a few homages in there notably for the Canucks (here's hoping they can make up for that terrible game 3!) and another great webcomic Menage a 3 by Giz (warning NSFW!).

This was done entirely in Flash from roughs to colours and while it was fast and fun to do somehow it annoys me too... why I honestly can't say. I considered adding some filters in Photoshop but liked the look of it. It seemed closer to Jeph Jacques' style even though he uses PS!

questionable artwork

Recently I have made it a habit to sketch every day or at least doodle while at work and came up with this one today, which I really liked. I have every intention of tightening this one up and adding colours if only to do justice to some of the greatest comic characters ever. You can read all about them here questionablecontent.net

Typically I am the last person to a party but for once I am on top of a "trending" topic! In this case the lovely young lady that is the spokesperson for T-Mobile. Her name is Carly Foulkes and after hearing people raving about her (I don't have cable you see) I looked her up on Google and decided right away to draw a picture of her in her almost as famous dress.

Along the way I decided to challenge myself again to do some digital colours and I think they turned out quite well. I have to give credit to an artist I have admired for a long time who posted a step by step for his approach to digital colours of this style. So here are the drawings! Sketch was done in Flash, clean up in Sketchbook Pro and coloured in Photoshop.

get set!

Back when I first started at Pork & Beans the first project I worked on was called Get Set! It still ranks near the top of my favourite shows that I have worked on. I don't think anyone will have actually seen it as it was created for a US school board. You know those videos (films on reel for me) that you would watch in social studies that were intended to teach kids life lessons. Yep that's what they were.

There were quite a few sequences that I worked on either as animator or as a posing artist but I don't have copies of them. Really wish I did. Any that I do have I will be sure to post here though!

Despite being made only 5 seconds ago I am keeping my promise to post more. This is an animation I did not too long ago for a project called Pete & Checkers. Really short but I always like when I can manage some decent fx. I get overly proud of them when they look right.
