Some sketches of the
characters from the Hunger Games series. Great books, if you haven't
read them I highly recommend you give them a go. Especially before or
instead of the movie, it was pretty flat.
Hope you like them, be back soon with a few more finished renditions.

a little colour
Decided to try some digital colours again since I seem to avoid doing them as much as possible. Sketching is good but I should probably "finish" something every now and then! Not that any of these is close to being finished :/
Threw up both the colour and the tones. Personally I like the tonal one better but when I really think about it I don't like either!
And some head sketches just to round things off.
Thanks for looking!

Wednesday
magi
Character idea that I sketched up of a Magi and her spirit companion. I had started to tidy up the lines and then got distracted. Once I came back to the drawing I started seeing too many things "wrong" so didn't go any further.
I have been reading a lot of Ben Caldwell's books and it has given me a new life with my drawings! I find that I am considering more of what things are for and why they should be there (telling a story) and simplifying shapes, straights and curves a lot more. It's made drawing fun again and hopefully I have managed to pass the plateau I was stuck on!
Hope you agree and thanks for checking out the blog!

nävis and the watcher
Conituning the theme of comic characters here is a picture of Nävis from the series Wake (Sillage for those who speak French)
I really like how this one turned out though I started to hack at it a little in the leg area... so much so that her feet are too big and kinda spoil the forced perspective. Ah well c'est la vie!
Thanks hope you all approve!

sketches, super heroes, and bums
Here are some new sketches from the past few weeks. A mash up page that ended up being less full than I though... mostly because once you scan images they suddenly seem far less good. Like back in the day when you would photocopy a mirror of it to see how bad it really was. Man I spent a lot of money at the print shop in Sheridan.
I hope you approve and thanks as always for checking out the blog.

Oh and a few shout outs... thanks Danny for the new sketchbook, it's kick ass. And thanks to G Brown... now all I want to do is draw Rally Vincent all the time!

business cards!
Well sort of...
I have been going through a bunch of roughs for some business cards and decided on two designs. Did a really rough mock up of them to see what people liked?!? Apologies to my graphic designer friends, please look away :P
This is the vertical card design, this one would be the most involved and would require colour I think to make it really stand out.
And here is the horizontal design... needs some sprucing up as well but hopefully you get the idea. This one definitely would be less time consuming to finalize!
Please let me know which one you prefer or any advice/critiques are also welcome!
Thanks for checking out the blog :)

test this *now with sprite animation*
Some pieces that I did for an application to a games studio:
A few months ago I was applying to a studio in Montreal for a designer position and they had me do a test... that took a week. Crazy but I did it and surprisingly it wasn't enough time to complete totally! There were three stages to complete: a GUI design, a character design, and a sprite animation.
It's been long enough I think that I could post some of the art I did for it (I didn't get the job if you are wondering). Some of you may remember the post I had for the Pirate some time ago. She was part of the test and I think the best piece I did for it. I have a bunch of sketches that I did for the character that are in the pile of things to be scanned. So they should appear here some time soon :)
Hope you like and thanks for checking in!

who the hell do you think we are?
Decided it was time to crack open the new sketchbook and draw something. So while I was watching watching the outstanding Gurren Lagann I did a little fan art of my favourite characters Kamina and Yoko! A special thanks to Karley for the inspiration/suggestion to watch the series!
If you want to check out the series you can watch it here: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
I have decided to do a lot more in the way of fan art since it was drawing comics that got me into this world in the first place. I am going to stick with the anime theme for a while and next up will be a giant panda of sorts. If you have any requests for a particular character please pass them on!
As ever thanks for checking out the blog!

top cat!
I have been waiting for ages to find out the release date of this movie! I was fortunate enough to have worked on it with the fantastic guys at Lizard Brain Animation
There are a few trailers available for it now and according to imdb.com the release is this fall for Mexico in 3D! Hopefully it makes it's English release soon after, it's my first feature film and I am really excited to actually see something I worked on in the theatre.
That and I have been waiting forever to put it on my demo reel!
For now here is the trailer for you to check out:
Thanks for checking out the blog! New art coming soon :)

mermaid
A sketch from a few days ago that I really wanted to share with you all. Since it wasn't digital it forced me to FINALLY get the scanner installed on the Mac. After the latest move the ubiquitous and overly reliable Dell is finally starting to wear down and will likely need to be retired soon.
I have a few pages to put together and post from the sketchbook and thought this would be a good place to start. But keep checking back as I will post others with a little more regularity!
Hope you like and thanks for checking out the blog!

rocket!
Sketch of the day is Rocket from Sucker Punch. I am really happy with the way it turned out though I don't think I managed to make it nearly as cute as Jena Malone is in the film.
In any case I hope you like it and thanks for checking out the blog!

questionable colours
While talking to my good friend Dave Truc he gave me grief for not posting anything recently. So I took this to heart and spent the last two lunch breaks coming up with some colours for the Questionable Content fan art I sketched a while back.
There are a few homages in there notably for the Canucks (here's hoping they can make up for that terrible game 3!) and another great webcomic Menage a 3 by Giz (warning NSFW!).
This was done entirely in Flash from roughs to colours and while it was fast and fun to do somehow it annoys me too... why I honestly can't say. I considered adding some filters in Photoshop but liked the look of it. It seemed closer to Jeph Jacques' style even though he uses PS!
Hope you like it!

Recently I have made it a habit to sketch every day or at least doodle while at work and came up with this one today, which I really liked. I have every intention of tightening this one up and adding colours if only to do justice to some of the greatest comic characters ever. You can read all about them here questionablecontent.net
Thanks for stopping by the blog and be sure to check back later for the updates on the progress of the new sketch, I might even add a background!
Cheers!

ugly americans
For all those that follow my sketch blog or gaming blog I have some news on my whereabouts. After moving to Ottawa for a spot with Big Jump Productions to work on Season 2 of Ugly Americans for Comedy Central.
I will do my best to update both blogs as often as possible, the miniatures in particular may be a while as I still have to set up a work space.
For now thanks for stopping in for the update and check out Season 1 of Ugly Americans it's a great show. Whenever I am legally allowed I will post up some of my animation from the series as well.
Thanks for reading!

quality advertising
Typically I am the last person to a party but for once I am on top of a "trending" topic! In this case the lovely young lady that is the spokesperson for T-Mobile. Her name is Carly Foulkes and after hearing people raving about her (I don't have cable you see) I looked her up on Google and decided right away to draw a picture of her in her almost as famous dress.
Along the way I decided to challenge myself again to do some digital colours and I think they turned out quite well. I have to give credit to an artist I have admired for a long time who posted a step by step for his approach to digital colours of this style. His name is Xavier Ramonède and you can check out his killer blog here: sushixav.blogspot.com
So here are the drawings! Sketch was done in Flash, clean up in Sketchbook Pro and coloured in Photoshop.
Thanks for checking out the blog and I hope you like the drawings!

starting the year in hell
Over the holidays I was looking through old files and sketchbooks and found some pretty interesting things I had done. Seeing your progress and realizing just how far you've come is always a treat so I though I would share some with you.
To start I have a whole bunch of animations that I did last year. To start I have some Neighbours from Hell, I really loved working on this show and feel that I learned a lot. Every time I look at a scene I can remember learning or trying something new. I won't post them all but here are a few that I am fond of:
Over the weekend I will do some scanning so I can post some of the old sketchbook drawing I found. A few are surprisingly good! Until then enjoy the NFH!

presented in technicolour
Here is the pirate that I had posted a while back with some colour. It was good to sit down and do some digital colour. It's been a while since I was able to do something that wasn't directly for work.
It has a lot of room to improve but I like the direction. I did a multiply on the underpainting which I think gives a little more depth. Could sue some more blending as well but really that was the time I had for it. If I was ever to go back she could definitely use a few more weapons, like a sword on her hip and some grenades. I hope that you like.

piratical!
Working on a test for a design position, part of which was to design and PAINT a sexy pirate. Been through a dozen or so roughs and then finally settled on this one. I'll post all the others later but for now I am putting this one up to get some feedback. I have all of tomorrow to paint this PHOTOREALISM style (yikes!) so if you have any crits get em in quick!
Thanks all and I hope you like!
